Mercy Hospital has a regular .8 – Full-Time Flex (6-8 hour day shifts) Infusion/Chemotherapy HUC opening. This person is responsible for providing organizational, receptionist, and clerical support to patient care units and the health care team. These duties include making special arrangements to meet patient’s needs, scheduling appointments and tests according to physician and nursing orders, monitoring and ordering supplies, transcribing orders to patient’s electronic medical record, and providing supportive services to nurses, providers and patients.  Most of the duties are performed under the supervision of the Charge Nurse.

Clerical Responsibilities

Obtains appropriate staff to assist in the care of patients through demonstrated proficiency in the paging/phone system. Maintaining and ordering departmental & clerical supply levels. Maintains an accurate and orderly filing system and a neat working area. Uses the patient information system to order records, x-rays, lab, etc. Answers, screens and directs incoming multi-line telephone calls. Call patients with appointment reminders. Maintains a courteous manner on the telephone, in patient/family interactions and in relating to other health care providers. Accurately transcribes physician’s orders. Notifies the Charge Nurse of orders to be signed off and implemented. Obtains charts, x-rays, equipment, medicines, blood products, etc. as individual situations require. Maintains cleanliness and order of the Nurse’s station. Provides additional clerical support to staff as directed.

Other Duties

Transports medications to and from pharmacy. Cleaning and stocking patient rooms between patients. Transport/escorting patients to other departments. Takes specimens to the Laboratory as requested. Answers patient call lights immediately and assists with non-medical requests (snacks etc)

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must carry out all aspects of the job using good judgment and problem-solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, and assumes responsibility for self-development within the role.

High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Certificate Medical Secretary Program or Office Management Program; or 6 months to a year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certification as a Health Unit Coordinator (CHUC) required within six (6) months of hire. Medical Terminology knowledge. Must have computer skills, Meditech experience preferred.
